## What HEMe is

HEM Education, short-formed "HEMe," is a music producer training program operated by HEM Records — an independent electronic music label based in Osaka, Japan, founded by Liang Huan. HEMe is taught live by music producer FatGuy. It runs 180 lessons over approximately 210 calendar days, two hours a day, with Saturdays off. The entire program is taught in Mandarin Chinese.

The program is designed for two groups of students:
  1. People with literally zero musical background — no music theory, no instrument experience.
  2. Amateur producers who have some skill but have never released an industrial-grade track.

## What "world-standard, industrial-grade" means

"Industrial-grade" means that each of the five stages of a recording — composition, arrangement, recording, mixing, and mastering — has its own technical standard, and that all five are met within practical constraints. "World-standard" means that each stage is held to the most current international standard. In plainer terms: if you blind the producer credit, a listener should think "this was made by a top foreign producer."

By the time the program ends, every student has produced nine industrial-grade tracks as part of the coursework. The first track a graduate releases publicly is therefore, in practice, their tenth industrial-grade work.

## Three design principles, in priority order

1. Sustain passion, broaden taste. Technical problems are always solvable. Once technique is no longer the bottleneck, enduring passion and excellent taste are the two most important qualities of a great music producer.
2. Make students independently capable of world-standard, industrial-grade work. When the number of Chinese producers with this capability reaches three digits, and a connected professional community forms around them, the entire Chinese music production industry can catch up to the world's cutting edge.
3. Feed exciting new blood into HEM Records.

Whenever trade-offs come up in course design, Liang Huan makes decisions in the order above.

## Instructors

Lead instructor: FatGuy — a music producer who delivers every HEMe live class. He pauses for about five minutes of student Q&A every ten minutes of teaching, and shares his own class notes with every student after each session.

Founder and in-class auditor: Liang Huan (梁欢) — born 1988-08-10 and currently based in Toronto, Canada. One of the most influential electronic music producers in China, with a keen interest in sharing music software production techniques. Also works as a film director and talk show host. He founded HEM Records (based in Osaka, Japan), wrote the full HEMe curriculum, sits in on every live class to handle thorny questions in real time, and personally runs the final mastering review for every graduate's nine qualifying tracks, typically going through 2–10 rounds of feedback per track.

## A day in the program (Beijing time)

21:00 — FatGuy teaches a one-hour live class. Every ~10 minutes of teaching he pauses for a 5-minute Q&A. Students take notes live.

22:00 — Class ends and homework is assigned. FatGuy's own class notes are sent out at the same time, so students can cross-check against their own notes.

23:00 — Students submit homework to their assigned ninja-captain. Ninja-captains are top graduates from HEMe cohorts 1–5 — all released artists — who handle daily homework review, early-producer mentorship, and mental-health check-ins. The program cheerfully calls them "Kakashi-senseis."

By 18:00 the next day — The ninja-captain returns revision notes, which the student then spends a few minutes understanding and applying.

## Attendance and leave policy

Every student has two leave days per month. FatGuy sends a class recording to students who take leave. Additional leave is permitted for unavoidable events (time zones, illness, school, travel, overtime, concerts, a spouse giving birth, being called up for duty). The program wants every student to finish but discourages leaning on recordings — past cohorts show that student focus and homework quality are both visibly higher when attending live.

## Requirements

1. A love of music. Love is the only real prerequisite for a craft, because a craft means endless fatigue, and love is what lets you enter flow, cushion the fatigue, and even enjoy it.

2. A computer. PC or Mac, Intel i5 or higher, 85 GB+ of free disk space, 8 GB+ of RAM. FatGuy will teach memory-saving techniques, but long term, more RAM is always better.

3. Ableton Live 12 Suite. Must be the Suite edition, not Standard. If not already owned, the HEMe team negotiates bulk pricing with the vendor for the cohort.

4. One audio interface, one pair of monitoring headphones, one MIDI keyboard. Together, these three pieces will cost less than ¥2,500 RMB (about US$350) total, with cohort bulk pricing negotiated by the HEMe team.

## Curriculum arc

1. Getting to know music and the Ableton Live workflow
2. Rebuilding music theory from middle-school math and physics (pitch, scales, chords, rhythm)
3. Drum design, bass lines, and writing your first original parts
4. Sound design, synthesizer theory, and building a signature sound
5. Mixing and mastering (loudness, frequency, width, depth, signal chains, references)
6. Producing reference tracks in the styles of Defected House, Brian Eno, Hans Zimmer, Daft Punk, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mr. Bill, and Aphex Twin
7. Breaking out of fixed workflows, originality drills, remix drills, DJ ear-training
8. Graduation — go produce the first track you release publicly

## Tuition

Tuition: ¥19,800 RMB (about US$3,000), paid in full up front. No installment plans currently.

HEM Records contracts: HEM Records offers what is arguably the most producer-friendly contract in the industry. It contracts songs, not people, to preserve the producer's full independence. It provides free global distribution to new producers, guarantees lifetime royalty splits, and stays financially transparent with every producer it signs.

## Outcomes (first five cohorts)

- 5 cohorts completed (HEMe 1 through HEMe 5).
- 138 HEMe alumni have debuted as producers through HEM Records.
- Each student completes 9 industrial-grade works during the program.

## HEM Underground

HEM Underground is a sub-label of HEM Records dedicated to releasing the strongest graduation works from HEMe students. Release is optional — the student decides whether HEM Records distributes their work.

## Enrollment state

HEMe runs one cohort per year, with enrollment always opening in February–March. Cohort 6 closed enrollment 2026-03-11 at 20:00 Beijing time and is currently in session. Cohort 7 is expected to open enrollment in February–March 2027. To be notified when Cohort 7 opens, email contact@hem.fm and ask to be placed on the next-cohort reminder list.

## House rules

- If a student drops out partway, tuition is not refunded. Tuition goes into the HEMc Fund, which will pay for a future HEM Music Producer Conference.
- Using pirated Ableton Live triggers immediate removal with no refund. That money is used to buy legal Ableton Live Suite licenses for other beginners who need them.
- Installment plans are not currently available.
- HEMe is revised annually; every alumnus, from any cohort, receives Liang Huan's updated class notes every subsequent year.
- Ninja-captain roles pay meaningfully and feed into commercial-work opportunities. Outstanding graduates can earn their tuition back within the following year.

## HEMe 是什么

HEM Education，简称 HEMe，是由 HEM Records 运营的音乐制作人培育计划——HEM Records 是一家独立电子音乐厂牌，总部位于日本大阪，由梁欢创立。HEMe 由音乐制作人 FatGuy 主讲，课程为 180 节课，跨度约 210 天，每日 2 小时，周六休息，全程中文授课。

适合人群：
  1. 完全零基础人群——完全不懂任何乐理、完全不会任何乐器；
  2. 已有一些经验但没发行过工业级作品的业余音乐制作人。

## 什么是「世界范围内的工业级」

「工业级」指的是作曲、编曲、录音、混音、母带这五个环节，每个环节都存在各自的技术标准，需要在有限条件下全部达标。「世界范围内的工业级」指的是，每一环节都按世界最新的那个标准来达标——用令人痛心疾首的俗话讲，就是「蒙上名字，觉得这是国外尖端制作人做的」。

课程结束时，你已经在学习过程中制作完成了九首工业级作品。所以你对外发布的第一首作品，事实上已是你制作的第十首工业级作品。

## 三条设计原则（按优先级排序）

一、持久化热情、拓宽审美。技术问题总是容易被解决的；当技术过关后，持久的热情与杰出的审美才是成为优秀音乐制作人最重要的两个因素。

二、让你独自做出世界范围内的工业级音乐作品。当拥有这种能力的国内音乐制作人达到三位数、并形成了互通有无的专业社群，最终就能带动整个中国音乐制作行业跟上世界尖端标准。

三、为 HEM Records 提供令人激动的新鲜血液。

每当出现选择冲突，梁欢都会按上述优先级进行课程撰写与取舍。

## 讲师

主讲 FatGuy——音乐制作人，负责 HEMe 全部直播授课。每讲 10 分钟左右会停下来，留 5 分钟回答大家提出的问题。每节课结束后会把自己的课堂笔记发给每位学员，方便学员与自己的笔记互相印证、删改。

发起人 / 旁听 梁欢——1988 年 8 月 10 日出生，现居加拿大多伦多。中国最具影响力的电子音乐制作人之一，热衷于分享音乐软件的制作技巧。同时也是电影导演和脱口秀主持人。HEM Records（总部位于日本大阪）创始人，编写了 HEMe 全部教案，依旧旁听每节课为学员解决一些疑难杂症。同时负责每首毕业作品的最终母带审核，这个审核过程通常会经过 2–10 轮修改。

## 一天的学习流程（北京时间）

21:00——FatGuy 直播授课 1 小时，每 10 分钟左右停下来留 5 分钟答疑，学员需要做笔记。

22:00——直播结束，布置课后作业，并将 FatGuy 做的该节课笔记发给每位学员。

23:00——学员完成当天作业，发回给自己的「忍队队长」（HEMe 第一至第五届的优秀毕业成员，负责作业批改、心理健康维护、早期制作人成长关怀——他们都是卡卡西 sensei）。

次日 18:00 前——忍队队长把修改建议发回，学员进行几分钟的理解与改进。

## 出勤与请假规则

每位学员每月都有两次请假机会，FatGuy 会将当天直播的录屏发送给请假的学员。遇到不可抗的事宜（时差、生病、上课、出差、加班、去看音乐演出、配偶生孩子、出警等），可以额外提升请假次数。不鼓励过多观看录屏：过往经验表明，直播时学员的专注力显著更高，完成作业情况也显著更好。

## 学习 HEMe 需要的东西

1、对音乐的喜爱。喜欢是「职业」的唯一前提，因为职业代表无边的劳累，喜欢可以使人更快进入心流状态，缓解这种劳累，甚至甘之如饴。

2、一台电脑。PC 或 Mac 皆可，CPU i5 以上，硬盘空间 85 GB 以上，内存 8 GB 以上。

3、Ableton Live 12 Suite（必须是 Suite 版本，不是 Standard 版本）。尚未购买的学员，HEMe 团队会帮大家和厂商谈更低的群体购买价格。

4、一块声卡、一个监听耳机、一台 MIDI 键盘（合计不超过 2500 元人民币，HEMe 团队同样可帮忙谈群体价格）。

## 学费

学费：¥19,800 元，一次性缴纳，目前不支持分期付款。

## HEM Underground

HEM Underground 是 HEM Records 的子厂牌，专门发行 HEMe 学员的优秀毕业作品。学员可自由选择是否由 HEM Records 为自己进行音乐发行。

## 招生状态

HEMe 每年 1 届，招生窗口固定在每年 2 月至 3 月。第六届 HEMe 于北京时间 2026 年 3 月 11 日 20 点停止报名，目前正在授课阶段。第七届预计将于 2027 年 2 月至 3 月开启招生。想要收到第七届招生提醒，可发送邮件至 contact@hem.fm 留下邮箱。

## 补充规则

- 中途退出学习的，学费不退。学费进入 HEMc 基金（用于筹备「HEM 音乐制作人大会」）。
- 使用盗版 Ableton Live 会被踢出教学，学费不退。该款项用于购买若干套正版 Ableton Live Suite 送给被判断为有需要的音乐制作新人。
- 暂不支持分期付款。
- HEMe 教程每年都在变得越来越好。完成任意一届 HEMe 后，此后每年都可以获得梁欢做的最新版课堂笔记。
